SINNERS: A Film by Ryan Coogler - An OSG Interactive Movie Review

By JT Morris

Runtime

2h 17m (137 min)

“Sinners” is cinematic tour-de-force with amazing acting performances from the cast, soulful musical performances from the artists, brilliant plot pacing, gorgeous visuals, a ton of subliminal cultural references and what seems like an endless amount of blood and gore once the party gets started.

The joint definitely checked all the boxes for me:

• Period piece✓

• Beautiful visuals✓

• Dope music✓

• Plenty of blood and gore✓

• Imaginative and engaging storyline ✓

• No Agenda pushing rhetoric that breaks immersion ✓

• Intense action and suspense ✓

• Amazing sets and wardrobe ✓

• Top tier acting from an all-star cast✓

Ryan Coogler is four for four when comes to creating beautiful cinematic experiences. His new Horror/ Suspense/ Survival Movie “Sinners” is a theatrical masterpiece. Coogler puts his Directorial and Screenwriting Talents on full display placing new twist on the horror movie genre. “Sinners” is not just a vampire movie and is a must see for anyone who loves movies.

Newcomer Miles Caton steals the show with his soulful vocals and powerful acting performance. IMBD lists this as his first theatrical role. It is safe to say that this young man has an amazing acting career ahead of him. I’m definitely looking forward to his next outing. Jack O' Connell as Remmick as our enigmatic "villain" embodies good old southern charm while being absolutely terrifying. His amazing performance will give you chills. Li Jun Li’s performance kept me on edge of my seat and Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo all clock in with wonderful performances that makes you truly care about their characters reinforcing to viewers why they make the big bucks. Michael B. Jordan clocks in an award worthy performance playing twins Smoke and Stack and Blues legend Buddy Guy even makes an appearance.

I can't remember the last time I left a movie theater feeling rejuvenated by a movie. The movie is able to get its point across without doing a lot of obnoxious virtue signaling. That's a rarity on today's cinematic landscape.

Music is the heart and soul of this movie and the Soundtrack is absolutely AMAZING! Swedish Composer Ludwig Göransson does his thing yet again following up his Oscar Winning performance on the Oppenheimer Soundtrack. Hannah Beachler works her Production Designer magic once again recreating Jim Crow Era Clarksdale. The sets are extremely immersive, making you truly believe you are back in 1930s Mississippi. Ruth E. Carter puts her Oscar Award Winning signature stamp on the film's wardrobe and costume designs. You can tell that the cast and crew put their all into this one. This genre-bending film may be the win that Warner Brothers so desperately needs.

True moviegoers and film lovers are in for a real treat with the release of "Sinners". The movie was released in a slew cinematic formats! While released in traditional and digital formats, I recommend treating yourself to IMAX or Ultra Panavision (If available in your area). "Sinners" was shot in 65mm film, utilizing both Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX 70mm cameras, resulting in two distinct aspect ratios: 2.76:1 for Ultra Panavision and 1.43:1 for IMAX. The film is also projected in 70mm prints and D-Cinema (DCP). "Sinners" is the first film to be shot in both Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX 70mm formats. The film also uses a 4K digital intermediate for master format.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A MOVIE FOR DA CHIL’REN!

Leave the crumb snatchers at home. This one is for the grownups!

“Sinners” is a must see and in my opinion the best theatrical release of 2025 thus far. The movie is a refreshing new take on the horror/ suspense genre. There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy. As I look at the release schedule for the rest of 2025, this may hands down be the best movie of 2025.
